Resistencia Bookstore, casa de Red Salmon Arts
1801-A South First St., Austin, Tejaztlán

Eleven Austin-area youth conceived and painted the mural under the artistic direction of  Nancy Guevara,
a Laredo native and recent graduate of the University of Texas College of Fine Arts.

The unveiling & ceremony will include a blessing of the mural by a local Danza Azteca group, traditional Son Jarocho music, a reading of poetry written by the youth artists, and comments by community members.  After the ceremony, the mural will be attached to the front of Resistencia Bookstore, casa de Red Salmon Arts, both longtime proponents and sponsors of Chicana/o and Indigenous arts, culture, and literature, founded by Austin Xicanindio poet and human rights activist raúlrsalinas.

En Lucha: Nuestra Fuerza es la Juventud depicts the history and hopes of the eleven youths as they struggled to overcome personal obstacles, from educational setbacks to incarceration in local juvenile facilities.  In the tradition of the Mexican murals of the 1920s and the Black Power and Chicana/o murals of the 1960s & 70s, En Lucha is intended to not only symbolize the youths’ personal history and the cultural history of their community, but to educate and empower the community at large.
